The voice of the main character Zinzi is well done, but I just couldn't get into the story. It seems most of the plot revolves around her search for a missing pop singer, and since I don't care about pop singers in real life, I really wasn't interested here either. It's also just not my style fantasy... Any book with "used condoms" and "skid marks in the toilet" is just a little too realistic for my taste. However, the concept of the animals and the mystery of the Undertow kept me reading for a long time, until I got bored of the private detective type storyline and started skipping pages. Overall, I'm sure this is a good book in its own right, but just wasn't for me.
